My product uses most of the Forms and Conventions of a real media product, the editing of my video has been done with a sensitivity to the tempo and mood of the music playing. For example the start of the video there is a slow piano instrumental consisting of chords being played and held, this is quite a slow tempo so therefore I placed a slow piece of video within this slot, I had a clip of Abbie walking past some children and continue to follow her until the lyrics start.
The genre of my Musician is present within the video, mostly of course through Mise-En-Scene, many of his other music videos are in the street, and urban areas as that is where he can relate to the most. My video is set in such areas, something that the general public can relate to and recognise.
The camerawork also helps to show the genre of the Musician aswell, I did not use a tripod for any of the filming and this is present in some of the shaking and movement of the video. This type of filming makes the video much more personal to the viewer, they feel almost as though they are looking at it through the eyes of another person.

How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary texts?
As I mentioned in the product and brand proposal I was keen to stick to the term "A Man and His Music" and also " Less is More" so I made sure that I stuck with this theme when doing all of my tasks. The digipak features silhouetted still images of clips from the music video, linking them both together. A Jimi Hendrix style black and white face of Ed Sheeran is featured on the front of the CD cover, being an iconic image associated to the single. Sticking with this Iconic image I chose to use this same image as the main focus of the promotional poster, thus linking all of my products together. I feel that sticking to the Brand and theme is something I have done well throughout this whole process, and feel happy that they are recognisable as a whole package as apposed to singular products.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Regarding my digipak I relied on audience feedback to get the final image for my back cover, I produced two images and asked a few of my peers which one they preffered, and which they would be interested in if seen on the shelf in a shop.

This was the result, and therefore I listened to my consumer audience and chose the image that won unanimously as my back cover image for my digipak.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

My use of new media is present within the Evaluation stage of this project, I used the popular common platform of 'Youtube' to get my music video out to the general public. This meant that it was viewable by millions of people, and also made it easier for my to show my peers and the target audience to get some feedback. I also used methods such as 'Facebook' and 'Twitter' to share my video to an even larger range of people.

How the project went?

I feel that the project as a whole went very well, I made sure that I was organised and understood what I needed to do before starting any of my tasks. I executed each task do the best ability that I could with the resources I had available to me. If I were to change anything about the project it would be to try and get better quality cameras, learn to use a higher grade of editing software so that my video can be a more professional standard.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-11300958693930331382012-03-23T05:31:00.001-07:002012-03-23T07:08:50.734-07:00Coursework: AdvertisementAfter creating the Digipak I moved on to creating my Advertisement, sticking to the minimalist and simple theme i decided to create something that would stand out to anyone that would pass by it, or come across in a magazine. I feel it would make the viewer stop and look at the page.

This is my final Advertisement to accompany my single, I decided to put an iTunes logo on it because in this current age Itunes plays a big part in where people get their music from. So therefore it would appeal to my Younger Target Audience if it was accesible on Itunes. I used the front cover design and encorporated the 'kiss me' lipstick mark on his cheek. I was keen to make sure that both the advertisement and digipak were relevant to each other which is why they are all in the same minimalist design.

The wall beneath Ed Sheeran and the Itunes logo tyes the advertisement in with the music video, as there are various sections that are seen standing infront of a wall. A wall is something that isnt too fancy and can relate to the every day person in every day street situations. I added another lipstick kiss to make sure that the audience would be sure of what song this was Advertising and it would be iconic for the viewer.

I also included a url to Ed Sheerans website, as his management company would want him to be linking everything he does together. And there are many opportunitys to earn money on his website through merchandise.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-29076759516740389342012-03-23T05:29:00.000-07:002012-05-11T01:26:28.855-07:00Coursework: Digipak imagesAs the front and back cover were the only bits that I wanted to include any information on I decided that I would use silhouetted still images from my music video for the rest of the pack. These are the images I selected.

Behind the cd case would be a mirrored piece of card, I wanted to include this because when the cd is taken from the holder the viewer would see their face in this mirror. In particular their lips, which references the song 'Kiss Me' this is also quite an original and quirky idea for a digipak and would be appealing to the target audience.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-78420693387304503332012-03-23T05:25:00.001-07:002012-03-23T07:08:34.192-07:00Coursework: DigiPak BackCoverAfter making the Front Cover i started to focus on the back cover, i came up with the idea of using the back of Ed Sheeran so it was like he was part of the Digipak, wether you view him from the front or behind.

I took the original front silhouette and blackened the insides and flipped it to create the illusion that it was the back of him. I knew that this needed to include the name of the single so that the target audience knew what they were buying.

I decided to use a small bit of colour in this back cover, i used red lips in the shape of the name of the song to tye in to the name 'Kiss Me' and also stand out to the audience.

Again this design is simple but has an appealingness and a sense of relation to the Ed Sheeran himself. I could of put lots of fancy lights and views and object on this back cover but decided to make it comparible with Ed Sheerans brand.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-6332954315656620432012-03-23T05:17:00.002-07:002012-03-23T07:08:10.475-07:00Coursework: DigiPak Front CoverTo acompany our music video we had to create a digipak and advertisment to promote the song and music video.

I started off by looking at the specifications of a digipak, i came across many examples and used these to help me to get the basic outline of what a digipak should include.

I looked at this particular digipak and noted that only really the front and back panels have information and writing on them. I decided to incorporate this into my design only supplying information on the front and back covers and having pictures from the video itself on the other pages.

I started by creating my front cover, I wanted to keep my whole digipak design in a minimalist style as this was relelvant to Ed Sheeran and his brand, he is simply a man and his music which is something i was keen to encode in my overall design.

I liked the idea of silhouetted figures and faces, and took inspiration from the iconic picture of Jimi Hendrix.

This helped me to create my front cover design, something minimal which i feel would stand out to a customer and my target age range. Of course Jimi Hendrix comes with a tagline of a bad boy image, drugs, sex and rock and roll, this is not like Ed Sheeran at all so when making the image I had to make sure I took this away from it and portrayed Ed Sheerans brand.

You can tell that this is Ed Sheeran and by being so simple it would have a stand out appeal to a customer.

Ed Sheeran is stareing straight into the camera which gives a more intimate and innocent vibe as apose to Jimi Hendrix slightly lifted chin stance which comes across as more defiant and tough. This is what breaks Ed Sheeran away from the drug, alcohol abuse tag which comes with reference to Jimi Hendrix, and makes his real, simple brand image come across to the audience.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-83309730740208064482012-02-13T01:27:00.000-08:002012-04-20T01:37:55.880-07:00Production: Editing ProcessThe editing in my music video was fairly basic, Following my proposed image of the product as a whole I didnt want anything fancy that would take away from the storyline of the piece. This meant that my editing process consisted mostly of cutting and ordering clips and basic colour changes.
The chorus of the song is repeated, and I was keen to have some sort of noticeable repitition within the actual video. I chose a certain dance section which fits with the chorus, and got my actors to dance it in different locations, using this footage for the various chorus' within the song.

I decided to use Windows Movie Maker as this is the easiest software format to be able to cut and paste clips.
After converting all of the video files into a WMM readable format I began to order them in a way that would tell a typical base of a romantic story, making sure that I looked into continuity closely where possible.
I also have a couple of short stop motion sections within my music video, I did this by taking a set of images whilst an action was being performed. Due to the way I took images as the actor was moving a few of the images have a blurred hand or item within them, making the overall section look like it is a video clip that is slightly lagging. If I had the equipment available to me and a larger time period I would of made this particular bit of editing better.

The editing process took a few weeks of work, sorting, cutting and pasting over 60 different video clips. I didnt find many problems with this process it was just a process of concentration and watching the clips over and over again, finding moments in the music when it would be appropriate for certain clips.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-77287634468413239662012-02-13T01:20:00.000-08:002012-04-20T01:26:52.772-07:00Production: Structure of Music VideoThe Structure of my music video includes two seperate sections, the first I refer to as the 'Real Life' section and the second the 'Dream' section.

The sections tend to be one after the other, occasionally there will be multiple sections but most of the time they are every other clip.

The 'Real Life' sections are in full colour, this is to make it look as real as possible so that the viewer understands that what they are seeing is a naturalistic scene and what is actually happening in the persons life.

The 'Dream' sections are in black and white and are most often sections of dance, this is to show that they are surreal. It is what the person is wanting to happen, and what they are imagining time together would be like.

At the end of the video the shot changes from colour to black and white, I did this to end the video on a high note and almost say that the dream has become a reality.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-2462766447034771982012-02-10T01:16:00.000-08:002012-04-20T01:17:12.214-07:00Production: Health and Safety FactorsIt is important that whenever producing any kind of video task, Health and Safety is looked into and followed to assure that everyone involved is not at risk of any danger to themselves or others.
Knowing that they do a lot of partnered dance work together I was keen to use this as an attribute in my video. They feel comfortable working closely together and follow instructions.

Abbie Steer, Jacob Pollock

The costume and styling for my chosen cast members didnt require much, the idea behind the video is that they are ordinary everyday people. So I told them to wear clothes that they would usually wear, and not dress up for the camera. This meant I had a more real life video.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-26694361460685728132012-01-31T00:51:00.000-08:002012-04-26T12:06:07.440-07:00Production: First day of filmingToday I am going to go to 3 different locations to film my cast;

The first is the Nobel School, in the Study Room, Corridor and pavements outside.

The Second is Fairlands Valley Park, this is a big green area that has different lakes and activity areas.

The Final place I will be filming today is the Town Centre and Leisure Park, this involves many passers by and lots of buildings as a back drop.

Evaluation of Filming day
The filming day went well today, we spent around an hour in each location and got a variety of shots in each. I made sure that I filmed each clip a couple of times so that when I come to editing I have more than enough to play around with. Abbie and Jacob both listened to instruction well and did everything I asked them to do.
Overall an excellent day.

I chose to analyse this particular music video as the genre and target audience relate closely to those that Ed Sheeran is also involved with.

Mulveys Theory is not present at all in this particular music video, as the artist 'Birdy' has chosen just to have herself in this video and as she is still quite young, there is no appearance of men or the male gaze.
This music video offers shots of the artist herself, and the setting that she has chosen to film in.
The only part of Mulveys Theory that could be taken as truthful in the case of this music video would be the idea that women are objects to look at, the artist has chosen a nice outfit and has made an effort with make-up, which could be seen as appealing to a certain audience. Although due to the age of the artist, it is more so likely that this is just her everyday clothing choice, and she was keen to be herself in her music videos, similar to Ed Sheeran.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-40712533528228274242012-01-27T03:13:00.000-08:002012-04-26T12:33:22.387-07:00Analysis of a music video using Goodwins Theory: Joshua Radin "I Missed You""

This is the official Music Video of Joshua Radin's " I missed you" Joshua Radin is described as an Acoustic, folk artist.

Goodwins theory is based on 8 key ideas that are present in music videos. I will analyse how far this is true for this particular music video.

1.Links between lyrics and visuals
Goodwin suggest that visuals will relate to the lyrics that are present at the time. This is quite true in this particular video, as the artist is singing the lyrics whilst being filmed and is also in the particular scene or scenerio that the lyrics mention.

2.Links between Music and visuals
He also suggests that the general mood and tempo of the music will have some relation with the visuals. The mood of this song is quite happy and up beat, this is present by the sunny day time scene that is presented to us within the music video.

3.Genre Characteristics
He says that there are stereotypical forms and values that certain genres take, and that these are included in each video. This can be seen to be true in this video, the typical guitar that acoustic, folk artists are related to is present in the majority of the video. The artist is also dressed in a care free everyday attire as apposed to something expecially for the video.

4.Intertextual Reference
Goodwin suggests that there are references to other mediums within music
videos, wether it be a laptop showing a website or a mobile phone. Intertextual reference is not apparent in this particular video, this could be to do with the genre, acoustic and folk artists are not stereotyped with having gadgets and technoligy around them, so wouldnt have that in there videos.

5.Notions of looking
This shows us the way that someone is seen and the gaze in which they
are seen through, according to Goodwin, Women are often seen as objects.
This isnt true in this video, the main artist meets a lot of people whilst journeying around in this video, and treats all of them as equals and as friends to him. This is heightened by the camera angles used when filming these particular scenes, the meeting situations always offer each person involved to be equal and friendly.

6.Voyeurism
This is when other people look at the artist or see an insight into their life. We can see this exampled in this video as we are being given a story of the artists journey around America.

7.Demands of the record label
The record label have the power to say what they think the artist should
be represented as, so they will want shots of the artist in a certain
outfit or position and this will be shown many times. This is very true in this video, the whole theme is situated around Joshua Radin, so he is the cameras focus for a high percentage of the time.

8.Performance,Narrative or concept based music videos
Goodwin says that music videos are often Narrative based and bring the music into a story like form. This is true in this video, the lyrics and video together offer a story of Joshua Radin catching lifts all around America and writing postcards to a girl that he misses.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-85190665990007153022012-01-27T01:57:00.000-08:002012-04-20T01:19:47.024-07:00Production: Locations ListMy House:
By using a list of characteristics and key features a general storyboard will be made about how and what will be shot and when. Both the artist and company producers/directors will meet to talk about what the video should involve and how the artist should come across in the video.
Once all frames are shot video editors cut and edit the clips to make it into a final video, when editing they will keep in mind the tempo of the music and also the general narrative or ideas that the artist and producers want.

Companys that produce music videos
There are many companys that make music videos, a few England based companys include, Happyhour productions, Scopitone and Annex. There are many different companys and also independent directors that are hired depending on the style that the music agency and artist want.

Where can you find music videos?
There are hundreds of sites that stream music videos, one of the most popular is youtube, but there are many such as vimeo, muzu and vevo. Music videos can also be bought on itunes, or seen on music channels such as MTV or 4Music.

What is the purpose of music videos?
The purpose of music videos is to promote the band, make the song stick in the viewers head or to let them keep up with the style or situation of the artist. But the main purpose is financial, getting the record company and artist money.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-61993529150783169092012-01-27T01:25:00.000-08:002012-01-27T01:59:54.205-08:00Mulveys TheoryLaura Mulvey's theory is very feminist and offers ideas that are a strong opinion in her everyday life.

Laura Mulvey suggests that because film makers are predominantly male that any women in their works are seen to be sexualised and place as objects and of less power than the men in the video.

She also mentions what she calls "the Gaze" this is explained as seeing women on display as an object for men to view and control.

with this in mind she feels that music videos are made with a sexualised and objectified view of women.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-89501146202098355762012-01-27T01:20:00.000-08:002012-01-27T01:59:54.205-08:00Goodwins TheoryGoodwins Theory is based on 8 key ideas
This makes the definition of offensive very hard to define, many music videos have been banned for a multitude of different reasons.

The first music video ever to be banned was 'Girls on Film' in 1981 on MTV, this was because it was said to expose too much flesh.

An artist who had a lot of her videos banned was Madonna, particularly 'Justify my love' because it seemed to involve excessive amounts of Homosexuality, sadomasochism and group sex.

Music videos have been banned for all sorts of reasons such as religion, nudity, violence and drugs, even seemingly innocent music videos have been banned so as to make sure that absolutely nobody could be offended by it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-46304682755819038942012-01-20T01:44:00.000-08:002012-01-27T03:40:33.265-08:00Research: Meaning behind the lyricsSettle down with me
Cover me up
Cuddle me in

Lie down with me
And hold me in your arms

In this opening section of the song I visualise a couple, or someone who is in love with someone and just wants to be with them.

And your heart's against my chest, your lips pressed in my neck
I'm falling for your eyes, but they don't know me yet
And with a feeling I'll forget, I'm in love now

This suggests that they are a couple and are sharing a passionate moment, and the person who is singing this feels completley involved and in love with the person.

Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love

The Chorus tells us that the artist is falling in love with someone the more they kiss them.

Settle down with me
And I'll be your safety
You'll be my lady
I was made to keep your body warm
But I'm cold as the wind blows so hold me in your arms

This shows us that the artist wants to be with their "lady" and keep them safe and in a happy relationship.

Oh no
My heart's against your chest, your lips pressed in my neck
I'm falling for your eyes, but they don't know me yet
And with this feeling I'll forget, I'm in love now

Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love

A Repeat of the Chorus is standard for every song, this helps to get the song known and is what is most commonly remembered about a song.

Yeah I've been feeling everything
From hate to love
From love to lust
From lust to truth
I guess that's how I know you
So I hold you close to help you give it up

This Bridge shows the ups and downs of a relationship, and how well the people in the relationship know each other.

So kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love

Kiss me like you wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
You wanna be loved
This feels like falling in love
Falling in love
We're falling in love

Once again there are 2 more repeats of the Chorus to embed it into the audience more, and also because it is the main message behind the song. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-13810243380816760462012-01-20T01:17:00.000-08:002012-04-26T12:08:11.027-07:00Research: Ed SheeranI have researched into Ed Sheeran to try and gain more of an understanding as to what his videos and music include and mean to him.

Background
Born in 1991 Ed Sheeran is only 20 years old so is still very young and therefore interested and influenced by young people. He was born in Halifax west Yorkshire, to Ireland and English parents.

Career
His break through record was "The A Team" which debuted at number 3 on the UK Charts. Since he has created 2 Albums which include well known songs such as "Lego House" and "Kiss Me"Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3694030812983378793.post-2726939161969995232011-12-30T01:39:00.000-08:002012-04-20T01:46:01.395-07:00Research: Product ProposalThroughout this whole process I am determined to stick to the branding and image of the artist Ed Sheeran, He says that he is just a man playing his music, nothing else nothing fancy, just him. This was something I wanted to stick to, to make sure that I was staying true to what he set out to bring to the Music industry.

I decided to stick to the idea of "A man and his Music" basic colours, basic footage, basic marketing.

Although there will be a lot less images and editing to do it is still going to require a huge thought process to make sure that everything is exactly how it should be. There is something about minimalism that makes it more appealing, the term "Less is More" is ever present within my work. The fact there is nothing to make it stand out, is what contradicts itself and makes the product stand out more.
